Class Descriptions
The Morton Street Dance Center, Inc. offers a full array of classes and has multiple levels in most dance disciplines. The following is a guide to help you select the most appropriate class placement(s) for each child. Should you have questions about a class or a particular placement, you are encouraged to speak with an instructor at Registration. Morton Street reserves the right to make placements or adjustments based upon a studentís experience or ability.
Creative Movement:
Recommended for young students ages 3-5 with little or no dance experience. This class will develop skills in rhythm, balance, elemental patterning, etc. It is a warm and friendly introduction to dance.
Pre-Dance:
Recommended for 4-5 year olds who mastered the movement concepts introduced in Creative Movement. This class introduces ballet and modern dance fundamentals.
Ballet I:
Recommended for new ballet dancers ages 6-9. Ballet I includes ballet positions, relevËs, basic traveling patterns and fundamental ballet movements.
Ballet II:
Recommended for dancers ages 7-12 who have completed ballet basics and are prepared to progress to more advanced ballet movements and patterns. Select Level II students may be eligible, by invitation, for Repertory B.
Ballet III:
Recommended for students ages 10 and above who have successfully completed Level II work. This class will begin a more intense study of complex movements. Ballet terminology and precise movement will be emphasized. Level III may be eligible, by invitation, for Repertory B.
Ballet IV:
This class is for the more advanced students. A firm grasp of ballet concepts, terminology and technique are required. Level IV students may be eligible, by invitation, for Repertory A.
Modern I:
Recommended for ages 6-9. This class will include modern dance basics, essential positions and movement styles. Students will explore various movements, spacial relationships and rhythmic patterns including percussive time.
Modern II:
Recommended for progressing, young modern dancers who have completed at least 1-2 years in a modern or ballet technique. This class will develop the skills gathered in Level I and begin to explore lyrical patterns. Select Level II students may be eligible, by invitation, for Repertory B.
Modern III:
Recommended for dancers 10 years of age and over who have completed extensive basics in modern dance. Students in this class will pursue more complex movements and various techniques and styles. Level III may be eligible, by invitation, for Repertory B.
Modern IV:
This class is reserved for the most advanced modern students. Advanced movements and patterns will be featured. Level IV students may be eligible, by invitation, for Repertory A.
Tap for Tots:
This class is for students ages 3-6. It will cover basic tap movements and rhythms.
Tap I:
Recommended for new tap dancers ages 6 and above.
Tap II:
Recommended for students interested in pursuing tap beyond the elemental level. Students will develop skill with more complicated tap rhythms and movements.
Hip Hop:
This class is pure funk. It is open to dancers who are 10 years or older. Dancers may only take hip hop if registered in ballet or modern.
Boysí Movement:
Boys can dance too! This is a high energy level class, for boys 6 and older, designed to introduce boys to the art of dance.
